Norman Finkelstein speaks in Edmunton

iW: Since 2001, Britain has held a Holocaust Memorial Day every January, which the Muslim Council of Britain – the country’s largest umbrella body of Muslim organisations – have consistently boycotted. They have called for a broader Genocide Memorial Day, but have faced increasing government and media pressure to attend. What do you make of the MCB’s stance?

Finkelstein: I think nobody should participate in those circuses. These Holocaust Memorial Days are an insult to the memory of the people who perished during the Nazi holocaust, and no decent, honourable person would participate in them. They have nothing whatsoever to do with memorialising the Nazi holocaust. They are simply political circuses designed to mobilise support for Israel and its latest killings and murders. So on principle I would not participate in those sorts of events.

Leaving that aside, I think the British have many genocides of their own that they can commemorate; they do not have to commemorate the one that was committed by the Germans. I mean, if the Germans set aside a date for commemorating the Indians who perished in the famines of the late 19th century due to British policy, but did not commemorate the Nazi holocaust, people would laugh. Well, it is exactly the same principle here. Britain has committed crimes aplenty, and under the repellent, repugnant and disgusting Tony Blair, it has added a couple of other crimes to the long list. Let them use a day to commemorate the crimes committed by Britain, and let Germany worry about commemorating the crimes committed by the Nazis. This kind of hypocrisy has gotten out of hand.

iW: How do you connect this activity with support for Israel?

Finkelstein: The two are intimately connected. The whole Holocaust Industry started up in the late 1960s after Israel’s victory in the June 1967 war. At that point, Israel became the United States’ strategic asset in the Middle East, and that is when the Holocaust Industry started. Its purpose was to protect and immunise Israel from criticism due to its policies in the Occupied Territories. The fact of the matter is that before the June 1967 war, the Nazi holocaust was barely mentioned in American life. There is a lot of documentary evidence, but just to give a typical example: in the 1960s, there were exactly two books in the English language – two scholarly studies – about the Nazi holocaust. Nobody was interested in it. The interest in it surged when Israel and its apologists began to use the Nazi holocaust as a weapon to crush dissent regarding Israeli policy.

He also documents atrocities committed during the 1948-49 war by the IDF, admitting in a 2004 interview, published in Ha’aretz, that material released by Israel’s Ministry of Defence showed that ‘there were far more Israeli acts of massacre than I had previously thought . . .
In the months of April-May 1948, units of the Haganah (en sionistisk terrorgrupp: min anm.) were given operational orders that stated explicitly that they were to uproot the villagers, expel them, and destroy the villages themselves.’ In a number of Palestinian villages and towns the IDF carried out organised executions of civilians. Asked by Ha’aretz whether he condemned the ethnic cleansing, Morris replied that he did not:

”A Jewish state would not have come into being without the uprooting of 700,000 Palestinians. Therefore it was necessary to uproot them. There was no choice but to expel that population. It was necessary to cleanse the hinterland and cleanse the border areas and cleanse the main roads. It was necessary to cleanse the villages from which our convoys and our settlements were fired on.”

In other words, when Jews target and kill innocent civilians to advance their national struggle, they are patriots. When their adversaries do so, they are terrorists.
